Next match Home v Whickham Lang Jacks
25 August 2010, Congratulations to Ashington born Michael Oliver, he became the youngest Premier League official ever when he took charge of Birmingham City v Blackburn Rovers at St Andrews (21/08/10). Michael made the national list in 2007 and to date his biggest match was the 2007 Conference play off final at Wembley between Exeter and Morecambe. The club know Michael as he works with the Northumberland FA assisting the development of referees in the county. His Premier League Debut resulted in a 2-1 victory for Birmingham with Michael producing five yellow cards and giving a stone wall penalty. The game had been pretty dour until the penalty award and at that stage BBC reporter Les Roopanarine reported in his match report
“The obvious contender for man of the match at that stage was Oliver, who at 25 years and 182 days old was making an assured Premier League debut.”

Don’t let the senior team tell you that it was due to international call ups that caused Hexham not to have a game on Saturday (4th Sept). It was due to the fact that there is seventeen teams in our division and it was our turn to miss out. So we decided to support “National non league day” and go and support one of ex juniors Shaun Vipond who is on the books of Workington Town who play in the Blue Square Conference North. Solihull Moors were the visitors to Borough Park and they were sitting in sixth place in the league four points and three places below the “Reds”. Shaun took his place in midfield in a disappointing first half for the home side going into the break a goal down after a Beswick penalty. The second half was much improved with Workington much the better team ,but it was not until the 88th minute when Midworth deflected the cross past his own keeper. By this time Shaun was limping after challenging for a loose ball but could not be replaced as Workington had used all their permitted substitutions and having been given the captains armband earlier he had to stop on. He was noticeably in pain but that was eased greatly when teammate Gareth Armison scored the winner deep into injury time. With the referee looking at his watch Shaun was forced twice to hook the ball away from danger as the ball seemed to be seeking him out just to test his injury. Six hundred and forty eight spectators were at the game and with these three late points won Workington are now two points clear in second place and hot on the heels of leaders Alfreton Town. It was a good day out and great to see one of our ex juniors in a higher level of football
With the Minor Cup tie v Whitley Bay “A” postponed due to the arctic weather, some of the senior team took up the kind invitation from North Country Leisure to try out the new ten pin bowling at the Wentworth. As you would expect there was a great deal of abuse during the time they were playing no more than when the bumpers were called for a couple of the party who failed much like there shooting at goal to keep the ball straight on target.
At the end of the day our champion was Steven Coates who took the first prize of £30 with a score of 146, but his brother Scott was not far behind with 141. After the bowling the team adjourned to the Phoenix where a game of a killer pool was won by Sean Heads after the challenge of a darts cricket match had to be abandoned by the unfortunate lack of darts!

Hexham Football Club held a fund raising talk in on Friday 15th April at the Tynedale Sports Club. Guests for the evening was Jimmy Montgomery and local lad Brian Robson the whole show was compared by BBC Radio Newcastle’s Simon Pryde. The evening had a Sunderland bias but the audience was split fifty/ fifty with both Newcastle and Sunderland supporters, so some lively debate was enjoyed. Jimmy who as well as playing over 537 games for Sunderland also won a European Cup medal with Nottingham Forest in a career spanning 608 games. Brian also has had a glittering life in football mostly spending his time between the North East and London, Newcastle, Sunderland, West Ham and Chelsea his major clubs making 674 appearances and scoring 265 goals. On the stage at the Tynedale Sports Club were perhaps two of the best Englishmen never to have received a full England Cap although Brian did make an under 23 appearance. Both ex players relived some of the memories of their long careers and gave some forthright opinions on today’s soccer superstars and later on took questions from the floor. It was a good night which was well attended and the football club did well from the ticket sales plus the raffle which consisted of a signed football, Ten pin bowling tickets, free weeks soccer coaching plus various spirits and the final item was an auction of a day’s golf at the Close House course complex at Wylam
Thanks to Arthur and John and everyone at Tynedale Sports Club plus Close House Golf Club / Wentworth Leisure Centre / Newcastle Community Football who donated raffle /Auction prizes and everyone who attended the event
(After extra time - Northern Alliance won 3-1 on pens)
You couldn’t have written the script as in a nervous, nail-biting finish the Northern Alliance advanced into the FA Inter-League Cup First Round on penalties.
Alliance keeper Ian Milburn was the hero as he pulled off two stunning penalty saves as they dumped out Lancashire & Cheshire 3-1 in an exciting shoot-out.
When Matthew Thompson hammered in off the underside of the bar in the last minute of injury time it looked like the Alliance had won it but the visitors forced a leveller with the last kick of the game.
Represented by reigning champions Harraby CC. the Alliance began brightly with Segio Royo. Thompson and Rob Bainbridge all going close.
The Alliance suffered a setback on the half hour when Dan Balmer was brought down and was unable to continue, being replaced by James Tose.
Bainbridge limped off soon after and with half time approaching Lancs. forced a corner that was only cleared to just outside the box where Hector Samuel struck a blistering half-volley that flew past Milburn into the roof of the net.
To rub salt into the wounds, Tose pulled a hamstring as the corner came in and he had to be replaced by Peterlee Town’s Steve Hockaday, who was helping Harraby out due to their shortage of fit players.
Marc Shiel looped a header over the keeper but a covering defender raced back to head off the line.
Royo let fly with a shot from 20 yards that flew inches wide and a Thompson back post header hit the side netting before the Alliance levelled with ten minutes to go.
Royo again fired from distance which was deflected into the path of sub Jordan Cowley who whipped in a low cross that Shiel fired in at the near post from 6 yards.
The Alliance were celebrating in the dying seconds of extra time when Thompson smashed a shot against the underside of the bar that bounced up into the roof of the net to make it 2-1.
But Lancs. threw caution to the wind as they went on one last surge forward and forced a corner.
With all of their team, including the keeper, packed into the box, Milburn’s punched clearance fell to Kane Berkeley on the edge of the box and he unbelievably lashed into the top corner.
In the shoot-out Otutu took the first kick for the visitors but his well struck effort saw Milburn dive to his right to touch the ball onto the bar.
Shiel confidently slotted his effort home to put the home side ahead before Knott then hit his kick at a comfortable height for Milburn to go to his right and save again.
Royo gave the Alliance a two goal lead with his successful kick before Berkely then fired the visitors 3rd over the bar.
Ashley Combes’ effort came back off the bar with Costa netting for Lancs but Dan Anderton became the match winner as he slotted home.
The Northern Alliance now face the Yorkshire Amateur League in the First Round of the competition which sees the winners represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup.
